Simikot Kailash Treks and Tour via Kerung is an adventurous journey that allows you to witness the glory of Nepalese and Tibetan landscapes in a single go. The journey starts with a scenic flight to the remote section of Nepal. The trekking starts from Simikot which is the headquarter of one of the remote districts in Nepal – Humla district. We pass some appealing landscapes in the backdrop of Himalayas and ascend up along an off beaten trail towards the Tibetan border. We pass lush forests and climb up along a secluded environment to traverse into no tree area. Slowly, the surrounding turns dry, barren and rocky. It adds to the wilderness of this journey. We pass Kermi, Yalbang, and Tumkot to cross Nara La pass at an altitude of 4580 meters and descend down along a tough section of the trail to Hilsa. It is a beautiful village that borders with Tibet. Leaving Hilsa, Simikot Kailash Treks and Tour via Kerung continues with a walk along the Tibetan border to enter into Tibet. As we enter Tibet, we take a drive along a scenic route towards Tirthapuri. On the way, we pass the fascinating Mansarovar and Raksheesa Lake. At Tirthapuri, we visit a monastery and enjoy a hot water bath in a natural hot water spring of Tirthapuri. Further, we drive to Tholing where we can visit an ancient monastery. Located in Zanda Country, in the Ngari Region of western Tibet, the monastery was built by the second king of the Guge Kingdom in 996. It is considered to be the oldest Buddhist temple in the region enjoy a wonderful day in the Guge Kingdom.

Simikot Kailash Treks and Tour via Kerung further takes you to the Guge Kingdom, a kingdom that was founded by the descendants of the Tobo dynasty in the 10th century. With over 700 year’s long history, the kingdom had created an advanced civilization that was destroyed after a war that broke out between the Guge kingdom and Muslim kingdom from Kashmir. The rival kingdom got victory over Guge which led to its massive destruction. Since then, the land is barren and abandoned.

After exploring the kingdom, we drive back to Tholing and head towards Tarchen. Tarchen is the foot of holy Mt. Kailash. We begin our Kora from Tarchen and pass Derapuk, Zutulpuk to form a circle around holy Mt. Kailash. After performing Kora around Kailash, the trek takes you to Mansarovar Lake where you can relish the serenity and purity of Mansarovar lake in the backdrop of beautiful Himalayas. Saga Dawa Festival is a month of merits. It’s a month-long festival that honors the birth, enlightenment, and nirvana of Buddha Sakyamuni. The word Saga refers to fourth and Dawa refers to month. So, Saga Dawa is the festival of the fourth month. In the fourth month of the Tibetan calendar, when the star of Saga appears in the sky, Tibetan Buddhists start to celebrate this festival. This month is considered as the most auspicious and significant month of the year. At the time of death of Buddha Sakyamuni, he instructed his followers to celebrate than to grief over his death. Hence, people celebrate this festival in the honor of Buddha Sakyamuni. On this day, people perform various religious rituals, chant prayers and perform Kora around Mt. Kailash. They attend a flag pole erecting ceremony at Tarboche.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival Day

Himal Eco Treks will welcome you at the airport and transfer you to the hotel for check in. Enjoy your time at the hotel. Overnight stay at the hotel

Day 2: Free day for clients/ permit and visa processing day

Today’s day is set aside for any last-minute preparation for your trek if necessary. You can also utilize the day by exploring the Kathmandu city or even opt for a sightseeing tour in Kathmandu. And, we shall utilize the day for your visa processing and preparation of travel permits Overnight stay at hotel in Kathmandu

Day 3: Flight to Nepalgunj

After a wonderful day in Kathmandu, we set out for our journey ahead. In the morning, after breakfast at the hotel, you will be transferred to the domestic terminal of Kathmandu airport. Here, we catch a flight to Nepalgunj. Upon arrival, you will be transferred to the Hotel Western Premier Inn in Nepalgunj. the tour leader will brief you about the plans of the next day. For the remaining time, you can enjoy your time at the hotel on your own. Overnight stay at hotel in Nepalgunj

Day 4: Fly to Simikot and trek to Dharapuri

Enjoy your morning with a delicious breakfast at the hotel. Then pack up your bags as we will be headed to Simikot today. From hotel, you will be transferred to Nepalgunj airport to catch a flight to Simikot. It’s a forty minutes flight amidst the magnificence of mountains. As we land in the Simikot, we can feel the isolation of the place in a single go. Simikot is the headquarter of Humla district, one of the remote districts of Nepal. The place is very traditional and untouched by any kind of modernization. From Simikot, we ascend up for a while and descend down the village of Tuling. As we walk pass the trail, we can explore the traditional people, their culture, lifestyle and influence of Tibetan Buddhist religion. From Tulung, we traverse through jungles and villages along Karnali river to Dharapuri. Overnight at a tented camp in Dharapuri

Day 5: Trek to Kermi

We enjoy breakfast at our camp and get ready for a pleasing day walk towards Kermi. The trail follows a flat land along the Karnali River to traverse into the cultivated fields of buckwheat, barley, rice, and potatoes. On the way, we come to cross two natural hot springs. If interested, we can enjoy a hot water bath in the springs for a while. Moving ahead, we visit Laikyo gompa and Lhundrup Choeling gompa on the way and continue our footsteps until we reach Kermi. Day 6: Trek to Yalbang

After breakfast in the camp, we follow the flat trail that begins to climb up steep after a while. We climb up steeply until we reach a small pass and cross a suspension bridge over the Saili river. Enjoy some incredible views of alpine trees and Karnali river as you pass the river and walk towards Yalbang. At Yalbang, we visit an old isolated monastery popular as Namkha Khyung Dzong. Day 7: Trek to Tumkot

We start another interesting day with a delicious breakfast in the camp. Leaving the camp, we follow a trail that goes above the Karnali River. We ascend up enjoying the spectacles of the Karnali region. As we climb higher, we can notice the change in vegetation. The trees start to disappear and the trail goes above treeline with only small bushes visible on sight. At Tumkot, we visit the Dhungkar Choezom monastery which is one of the significant Shakya monasteries in Tibetan religion. Overnight at a tented camp in Tumkot

Day 8: Trek to Yari

After breakfast in the camp, we start walking along an easy trail just above the Karnali River. The trail is completely isolated and remote. We climb up the trail and continue until we reach Yari. As we go up towards Yari, we can notice a complete change in vegetation. The landscape now is more isolated, rocky and barren. Overnight at a tented camp in Yari

Day 9: Trek to Hilsa

Leaving our camp at Yari, we climb up to the Nara La pass at an elevation of 4620 meters. It’s the first pass of our trek. We cross the pass enjoying some excellent views of Tibetan plateaus and Yari village. Now, the difficult section of the trail arrives. The trail down to Hilsa from the pass was quite a difficult one but nowadays there is a possibility to take an easier through the road. We drop down this section to reach the village of Hilsa. Hilsa is a border town and the landing point for pilgrims visiting Mt Kailash via helicopter. From Hilsa, we head towards Friendship Bridge, clear all the customs formalities and drive towards Purang. Overnight at a guesthouse in Purang

Day 10: Drive to Tirthapuri via Rakshees Tal and Mansarovar Lake

After breakfast in guesthouses, we jump into our ride and drive towards Monster. On the way, we come across two beautiful lakes called Rakshees Tal and Mansarovar Lake. Upon arrival in Monster, we stop at a guesthouse and take rest for a while. Then we head towards Tirthapuri. Located northwest of Mt. Kailash, Tirthapuri has a hot spring that is closely associated with Guru Rinpoche. Many pilgrims come here to take a bath in this holy hot spring. If interested, even we can enjoy a hot water bath in the spring to soothe our senses. Next, we visit a monastery with the footprints of Guru Rinpoche and return back to our guesthouse in Monster. Day 11: Drive to Tholing

Today, we cross Chomo La pass at an elevation of 5050 meters and drive towards Tholing. We pass some astonishing landscapes as we drive towards Tholing. Upon arrival, we visit a monastery at Tholing. Day 12: Drive to Guge kingdom/ explore the kingdom and drive back to Tholing

Day 13: Drive to Tarchen

Today, after breakfast at the guesthouse, we drive back to Darchen at the foot of the holy Mt. Kailash. Upon arrival, we explore around Darchen and a Tibetan Medicine Center nearby. We even try to visit above Tarchen just for acclimatization purposes. Overnight at Sun Moon guesthouse in Tarchen

Day 14: Start your Kora journey and trek to Derapuk

Today, we initiate our Kailash Kora journey from Darchen. Darchen is the commencement point of our Kailash Kora tour. We follow the trail that leads us to Derapuk. From Derapuk, we can enjoy some amazing views of the north face of Mt. Kailash. Our camping stuff are loaded on a supporter truck to Tarboche. At Tarboche, we haul the loads over yaks and head towards Derapuk. Overnight at a tented camp in Derapuk

Day 15: Cross Dolma La Pass and trek to Zutulpuk

It’s a challenging part of our kora journey. Today, we climb up to Dolma La pass at an elevation of 5630 meters. It’s the highest point of our entire journey. As we climb up the pass, we will be rewarded with some stunning views of mountains, plateaus, and other mountainous landscapes. The pass in itself is decorated with five colored flags which spreads a positive aura in the surrounding. Dolma is a Tibetan term that means – Goddess with seven eyes. From the pass, we descend down to Zutulpuk and visit some ancient cave monasteries in that area. Overnight at a tented camp in Zutulpuk

Day 16: Trek back to Tarchen and drive towards Mansarovar Lake

Leaving Zutulpuk, we trek for around three hours to Tarchen. We gradually come out of the valley and walk towards the Barka plain. Upon reaching Tarchen, we accomplish a complete circle around Mt. Kailash. From Tarchen, we drive for another 40 minutes to Mansarovar Lake. It is a holy lake in the shadows of Mt. Kailash. The lake possesses a high significance amongst the Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims. The lake is clear sapphire-colored freshwater lake. Overnight at a tented camp near Mansarovar Lake

Day 17: Drive to Saga

Early in the morning, we enjoy our breakfast with some rewarding views of Mt. Kailash and Mansarovar Lake on sight. Then we leave the lake and drive towards Saga. We pass Horqui and cross Mayum La pass at an elevation of 5225 meters on the way to Saga. The drive for the day goes through the small towns like Zhongba and Paryang. We will be blessed with some amazing landscape on the route as you drive pass to Saga. Overnight at a guesthouse in Saga

Day 18: Drive to Kerung

Today, we take a long drive along a scenic route for around five to six hours. We drive towards the Nepal China Friendship bridge border and cross the border. As we leave the border, we bid goodbye to our Tibetan crew and meet our Nepalese crew members across the bridge. Then we take an awesome ride along a scenic route to Kerung. Overnight at a guesthouse in Kerung

Day 19: Drive to Kathmandu

Finally, we head towards the capital city of Kathmandu. We drive along the scenic route full of rivers, lush hills, valleys, villages and farmlands to Kathmandu. On the way back, we drive pass the Bhotekoshi river rafting spot and bungee jumping spot. Upon reaching Kathmandu, you will be dropped at your hotel in Kathmandu. Overnight at a hotel in Kathmandu

Day 20: Free day in Kathmandu

It’s an extra day in Kathmandu city. You can utilize the day on your own. If you want to go to some specific places, you can inform us or you can walk around the streets of Kathmandu for shopping activities. Overnight at the hotel in Kathmandu

Day 21: Departure Day

Finally, it is time for us to bid you goodbye. A member from our team shall escort you to the airport before your scheduled flight for your journey ahead.
