Trip Overview

The Champadevi Hill Day Hiking is a captivating journey for nature lovers, adventure seekers, and spiritual pilgrims alike. Located just a short distance from Kathmandu, this day hike offers a blend of cultural exploration, natural beauty, and breathtaking views of the Himalayan range and the Kathmandu Valley. This guide provides detailed information to help you plan and enjoy your adventure to the fullest.

Overview of the Champadevi Hill Day Hiking
  • Location: South of Kathmandu, Nepal
  • Elevation: 2,278 meters (7,474 feet)
  • Duration: Approximately 6-8 hours round trip
  • Trail Length: Around 14 kilometers (8.7 miles) round trip
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Best Time to Visit: Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November)
Getting to the Trailhead

The journey to Champadevi begins at Pharping, a historic village located approximately 19 kilometers from Kathmandu. Pharping is easily accessible by public bus, taxi, or private vehicle, with the drive taking around 45 minutes to an hour. The village itself is rich in cultural heritage, featuring ancient temples and monasteries, making it a great place to explore before starting your hike.

The Hiking Route

The Champadevi trailhead starts near the Pharping bus station, where you can also visit the famous Pharping Monastery and the sacred Asura Cave, both important spiritual sites. From here, the trail ascends gradually through lush pine forests and traditional villages. As you climb, the path offers a blend of gentle slopes and steeper sections, making it accessible yet challenging enough to be engaging.

Key Sections of the Champadevi Hill Day Hiking
  1. Initial Ascent: The first part of the hike involves a gentle ascent through terraced fields and local settlements. The trail is well-marked and provides ample opportunities to observe the daily life of the local communities.
  2. Middle Section: The trail becomes steeper as you enter the forested area. This section is known for its rich biodiversity, including a variety of bird species and vibrant flora. The shade provided by the pine and rhododendron trees offers a pleasant respite from the sun.
  3. Final Ascent: The final stretch to the summit is the most challenging part of the hike, with a steeper incline. However, the breathtaking views of the Kathmandu Valley and the distant Himalayan peaks make the effort worthwhile. Along the way, you’ll also encounter several resting spots with prayer flags, adding a spiritual ambiance to the journey.
Reaching the Summit: Champadevi Temple

The summit of Champadevi Hill is marked by the Champadevi Temple, a significant pilgrimage site for Hindus and Buddhists. The temple is dedicated to the goddess Champadevi, and it is particularly busy during the full moon day in April when devotees from the Kathmandu Valley come to pay their respects.

At the summit, you are rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. On a clear day, the snow-capped peaks of the Langtang, Ganesh Himal, Gauri Shankar, and Dorje Lakpa ranges are visible. The expansive view of the Kathmandu Valley below, dotted with temples and urban settlements, provides a stark contrast to the tranquil environment of the hill.

Descending from Champadevi Hill

The descent follows the same path back to Pharping. While the downhill journey is quicker, it still requires caution, especially on steeper sections. Take your time to enjoy the changing scenery and perhaps visit any sites you missed on the way up.

Flora and Fauna

Champadevi Hill is home to a variety of plant and animal species. The trail is particularly beautiful during the spring when rhododendrons and other wildflowers are in bloom. Birdwatchers will also find the hike rewarding, with species such as eagles, vultures, and various songbirds frequently spotted along the trail.

Adventure of a lifetime in the Himalayas My experience with Bhairam and Himal Eco Treks was amazing! Everything was accounted for from Kathmandu hotels, local and remote transportation (that flight into Lukla is one to remember), tea houses on the trails, food, knowledgeable guides happy to inform on local culture and what that peak waaay in the distance was. I would definitely travel with this company again.

Excellent Manaslu trek experience Bhairam was our lead guide for an 11 day trek on Manaslu Circuit, with a party of 5. We had 2 guides and 3 porters. Our experience was excellent in every respect, including arrangements from pick up from airport to departure. Bhairam was wise, patient, kind, generous, and led our group with experience and skill. I highly recommend Bhairam, as well as the company he is very much a part of, Himal Eco Treks.

Gokyo Lakes and Kathmandu Tour The team at Himal Eco Treks went above and beyond for our trek to Gokyo Lakes. They made sure our trip was unforgettable, stress-free, and safe. Thank you to Bhairam and Gakul who were excellent guides and managed all the little details that made the trip run smoothly. They set a comfortable pace and were always checking in with us. I want to add that from what I observed the porters they hired were treated with dignity and concern for their safety, as well. Thank you to Ramesh for a fantastic post-trip tour of Kathmandu's beautiful historic sites. 10/10 recommend Himal Eco Treks for anyone considering a Himalayan trek. It is a life-changing experience.

Great Himalayan trek and Kathmandu tour Himal Eco Treks did a fantastic job organizing and guiding our trek in the Everest region. We had comfortable accommodations, good food, and our guides did a great job pacing our group well and supporting members of our group who were having trouble. Post-trek, Himal Eco Trek arranged great last minute tours of Kathmandu and Chitwan. Our guides also helped arrange a special birthday celebration for me when my birthday happened to be one of the days of our trek. Highly recommend for anyone interested in treks or other tours in Nepal!

Go visit Goyko region! I had a wonderful experience with a group of friends trekking to Goyko, Goyko lakes and summit in Goyko Ri. It was as if we submitted the top of the world! The tour is very well organized, the guides were very knowledgeable, accommodating, and friendly to be around. The guides kept us all safe at altitude too. The tour company was also very flexible about arranging different side tours in Kathmandu and different departure dates for members of our group. It was a real pleasure and I look forward to working with them again in the future.

Trip, trek and visits, 2 weeks in Nepal organized by Himal Eco Treks company. Professional and reliable, we are very happy. We chose this agency based on a friend’s recommendation, and we’re so glad we did! Now we’re happy to recommend it ourselves. We spent two unforgettable weeks traveling across Nepal, with everything organized by Bhairam: guided tours (Heritage Tour in Kathmandu recommended), a multi-day trek (special thanks to our porter, Dak), transportation, accommodations, and all the logistics. Everything was thoughtfully arranged and adapted to our pace, making the entire experience smooth and stress-free. It was our first trip to Nepal, hopefully not the last. Professional, reliable, and genuinely caring, we are truly satisfied and grateful! Sandrine and Yamil
