Saribung Pass Trek From Upper Mustang is a recently establish trekking route which has gain huge popularity lately. Over a short period of time, this trekking trail has become famous for an expedition adventure. Saribung pass trek takes you along the rugged trail to the north of Mustang region from where you can see the Damodar Himal that is placed quite close to the Tibetan border. Saribung pass trek in overall is a superb combination of Himalayas, Tibetan Culture and other natural bliss. The views of the mountains like Mt. Dhaulagiri, Mt. Manaslu, Mt.Annapurna and many other peaks look spectacular. Damodar Kunda, Nar Phu Valley, Upper Mustang and Jomsom add to the glory of this trek.
Saribung is one of the remote parts of Nepal. No sign of modernization can be seen in this area. In 2006, it was first open for trekking and was known to only a few trekkers. Also, the trail is rough which passes some of the ancient Tibetan villages to the high cliffs. On the way to the Saribung peak, you may have to go through many high passes with ice and creases which makes this trek even more challenging. The route is quite difficult as can you find yourself walking through many passes with ice folds from Damodar Kunda to Nar Phu valley.
Damodar Kunda is a popular lake in Upper Mustang that has high value amongst the Hindu pilgrims. Many people around the globe come to visit this place annually for the religious importance it possesses. Likewise, Nar Phu valley is a highlight of Saribung pass trek. Furthermore, this trek commences with a flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara. Upon reaching Pokhara we take another flight to Jomsom. Your actual trek will start from Jomsom. You get to walk through the beautiful Kali Gandaki valley. On the way, you pass some amazing places like Kagbeni, Chele, Gelling to Lo Manthang. You can also visit Luri Gompa and Damodar Kunda via Thanti. The trail will lead you to the Saribung peak from where you can relish the magnificent views of mountains and glaciers like Mt. Today, we take an early flight to Pokhara. After around thirty five minutes flight, we will find ourselves at the airport in Pokhara. You will be transferred to the hotel for check in. After lunch and rest, you will be guided to some beautiful places of Pokhara for sightseeing. Walk along the PhewaLake and enjoy boating. Visit a temple in between the lake and make your way to Gupteshwor temple, a famous Hindu temple in Pokhara. We take an early flight to Jomsom. The flight in itself is captivating as we will be flying up between the two mighty mountains i.e. Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. As we fly up, we can also see a change in landscape from lush to arid. The lushness of Pokhara slowly disappears and dry landscape comes to sight. Jomsom used to be the administrative center of Mustang. Upon our arrival in Jomsom, we start our trekking journey. We take a gravel path along Kaligandaki river to Kagbeni. We leave Kagbeni and follow our trail to the bank of Kaligandaki river upstream. We then enter Mustang region and pass various ridges on the path. On the way, across the river, a popular gompa called Kang Gompa comes to our sight. We visit the gompa and continue towards Chuslang village. As we approach towards the village, we can see the colourful prayer flags and chotens on the way. The white washed houses looks alluring. We pass the fields of wheat, potatoes and apple orchids as we ascend to the village of Chele. Overnight at a guesthouse in Chele
Today, we follow the trail up to Taklam La pass. As we climb up the pass, we will pass through the narrow stretches and Tibetan plateaus. What is more interesting is the views of the Nilgiri, Tilicho peak, Yakawa Kang and Damodar Danda that will energize you throughout the day. We further walk for around three hours and pass some small streams and juniper forests to Syangbochen. Overnight at a guesthouse in Syangbochen.
Leaving Syangbochen, we ascend up and follow our trail to Tama gaon. We continue walking to Chhung – Kah from where we ascend up to Jaite and then to Dhakmar via Ghemi. Overnight at guesthouse in Dhakmar
Our destination for the day is Tsarang and our trek today is quite easy. We descend down to Ghemi khola and pass mani walls on the way to Tsarang. Overnight at a guesthouse in Tsarang.
Today, our trail descends down until we cross the Tsarang Chu from where our trail climbs up steep through a rocky trail to a pile of stones on a ridge followed by Tholung Valley. The trail from the valley turns north and climbs up to a large Chorten which actually marks the boundary between Tsarang and Lo. We further climb up and cross a stream to a desert like landscape. As we reach a top of ridge, the walled city of Lo comes to our sight. After a short descend, our trail climbs up to the plateau of Lo Manthang at 3730m. we cross an irrigation canal and walk towards the entrance gate of the Lo city. Overnight stay at Lo Manthang.
Lo Manthang is a city of wonders. There and many must visit places here therefore, we have set aside two day here for excursion. Today, we visit the walled city in Lo. There are four temples within the city walls. However, the buildings are locked and the key to the temples are given to the caretaker which makes the access to the temple quite challenging.The tall Champa Lhakang is dated back to 1420s. The central courtyard has beautifully carved wooden pillars and inside the temple is a huge painted statue of Maitreya, (the future Buddha). This huge clay statue sitting on a pedestal occupies the entire area on ground floor. We visit the walled city and the villages nearby and spend our day exploring the unique attire of this city. Leaving the mystic city of Lo Manthang, we climb up to a glacial valley with reddish brown historical wall city on our sight. The picturesque view of the city as we climb up gets perfect than ever! We walk along the mountain ridge for about an hour and descend down to the village popular as DHI. From here, we cross a river to follow a path that takes us to Yara. Overnight stay at Yara
We have set this day for exploring Yara village. Today, we visit the Luri Gompa (also known as Kagyukpa cave monastery). This gompa was founded in the 13th century and has its own religious importance. After visiting the monastery, we head towards Damodar Kund. This place is popular amongst hindu pilgrims. We can find black ammonite fossils here which and collected and worshipped by Hindus and Buddhists pilgrims as a form of God Vishnu. Overnight stay at Yara
Today, we leave Yara and follow our trail that winds up into large grassy plateau which opens up to a beautiful place that gives some awesome views of Mt. Dhaulagiri and many other mountains. We walk for around five hours and descend down to the camp at Ghuma thanti. Ghuma Thanti is a beautiful place that lies near a river. It is a popular halting spot for the pilgrims who come visit the sacred lakes of Damodar Khunda. Overnight stay at Ghuma Thanti
Today, we head towards Bacha Khola. We climb up steep through the slopes and cross a long steps that goes through two passes over 5000 metres altitude. The trail is easy and well marked therefore safe however high altitude can be a problem. After walking through the steps, we descend down steep until we reach Bacha Khola. Leaving Bacha Khola, we ascend up the gorge before we take a large slope that lies on the left bank of the river. Then we follow a steep path that helps us gain the alttitude quickly and cross a pass that offers some fascinating views of Mt. Dhaulagiri and Damodar Himal. We continue our trail until we reach Damodar Kunda. Overnight stay in Damodar Kunda
Damodar Kunda is a holy site for Hindu pilgrims. It is a beautiful place where you will find Hindu shrine upstream from the camp and an old Buddhist chorten on the ridge that denotes the religious significance of this place. We spend our day in Damodar Kunda appreciating the beauty that lies in nature. Overnight stay in Damodar Kunda
Our destination for the day is Japanese Base Camp. We follow small path that takes us to kharkas where we can see sheep grazing all along. On reaching the Japanese Base Camp, we can see a large chorten built by the Japanese therefore named as Japanese Base Camp. Overnight stay at a tent in Japanese Base Camp
Tody, we leave Japanese Base Camp and move towards the High Camp. The initial part of our climb starts from the left bank moraine of the glacier. This part of journey is quite difficult due to the snowy path that makes our walking difficult. We must pass across a snowy glacier horizontally to reach the other side of the bank. We join the right bank of the moraine and open up to the high camp where we can get some splendid views of towering peaks like Damodar Himal: the Khumjungar Himal. Today is a free day at High Camp. We spend our day exploring around the surrounding places and acclimatizing to high altitude that is essential for our expedition journey ahead. Overnight stay at a tent in Japanese Base Camp
Today is an exciting day where we summit the peak of the Saribung peak. We wake up early in the morning and climb up to Summit of Saribung. We climb up for around three hours on the moraine. After climbing for around three hours, we find a cracked ice which separates us from the summit by an easy path with large snow slopes. We continue climbing until we reach the top. Once we reach the top, we can get some splendid views of the surrounding peaks. After spending some time on the top, we descend down to the base camp from the western side. Early in the morning, we leave the base camp and move ahead towards Nar Phedi. We walk for around six hours today. We traverse the Saribung pass and trek down steep through the snowy trail to follow a small stream. Our descend down the pass is quite challenging as we come across many crevasses. We continue descending down until we reach the Phedi which will be our halting point for the day. Overnight at a guesthouse in Phedi
Our walk for the day is quite pleasing and interesting as we walk along the barren valley with magnificent views of Himalayan peaks around. We continue walking along the trail until we reach Phu Gaon which is considered as one of the hidden valleys in the Mustang region of Nepal. The culture, religion, lifestyle, and natural diversity of this village is phenomenon and our walk can be an interesting encounter with the people of different ethnic groups like Lama, Gurung and Ghale. We can see the people engaged in activities like subsistence agriculture and animal breeding for livelihood. An old Buddhist Monastery -Tashi Lakhang Monastery is also an interesting place to visit in Phu gaon. Overnight at a guesthouse in Phu Gaon
Today, we leave the deserted valley and walk towards Meta. On the way we come across the Phu river. We follow the river until we reach Meta. On the way, we will be blessed with the beautiful views of Kangaroo Mountain, Pokharkan and Amotsang Himal. Overnight at a guesthouse in Meta
Today, we make our way to Koto. We walk along the Nar Khola and pass thick pine and rhododendron forests to Koto. Our way today will be quite tiring as the path undulates ups and downs, however, the enchanting views of Mt. Manaslu, Mt. Hiuchuli, Lamjung Himal and Annapurna II will keep us going. We stop at a guesthouse in Koto for overnight stay.
Early in the morning, we take a local jeep that will take us to Besisahar. We pass villages like Dharapani and Jagat to Besisahar. From Besisahar, we take a tourist bus that will bring us back to the buzzling city of Kathmandu. The scenic route along the Trishuli river for the day will make your ride wonderful. Today is your leisure day in Kathmandu. You can either rest or stroll across the valley for shopping or anything else as per your preference. In the evening, you will be treated with an authentic Nepalese cuisine as a farewell dinner. Overnight in the hotel
