Overview

Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek 2021 is one of the most beautiful treks to opt for in the year 2021! It is a short and easy hike to one of the exotic locations on the earth. Have you ever imagined a clear, serene and azure lake in the backdrop of wild snow-clad mountains? If yes, then you have surely pictured it out! But believe us, the reality is far beyond your imagination. Shey Phoksundo Lake is a high altitude freshwater lake located inside the boundary of Shey Phoksundo National Park at an elevation of 3600 meters. Lying in the mystic land of the Dolpo region, the lake settles in a dramatic location amidst the sheer glory of mountains. Geologists have confirmed that the lake was formed by a post-glacial mountain collapse on a river. The collapse formed a dam in Suligad gorge around 40 thousand years ago. There is an outlet of the dam that thrusts out as the Ringmo waterfall. For many years, the Dolpo region has been isolated and maybe it’s the result of the isolation that it has been able to maintain its beauty intact. Apart from its natural perspective, Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek is considered as a holy lake by Buddhists and people following Bon Po religion.

The mystic land of Dolpo

Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek 2021 takes you to the mystic land of Dolpo. The less-traveled path, the off beaten trail, dramatic landscapes, mountains, and the rural landscapes! Dolpo region is definitely a flair for many travel lovers. The trail to the Shey Phoksundo lake passes through some amusing landscapes that comprise dense alpine forests, wild rivers, rocky hills, traditional villages, and snow-clad mountains. Traversing into Shey Phoksundo National Park is an enriching experience in itself. It is home to various species of floras, faunas, wildlife, birds, and butterflies. One can encounter some unique species like Snow Leopard, mountain goat, Blue Sheep, Jackal, etc. as we walk past the thick dense forests on our way. Dolpo region was a mystery until it was opened for trekkers in 1989 and a famous writer Peter Matthiessen mentioned the region in his book – The Snow Leopard.

Traditional villages and Bon Po religion

Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek 2021 is a delight not only for nature lovers but for those who are curious about the diverse culture and religion prevalent around the globe. Walking into the land of Dolpo is a way to expose yourself to a different world with traditional people possessing their own unique culture, traditions, and lifestyle. The traditional village in the region resembles that of the Tibetan villages. The people are mostly Buddhist and follow Bon Po religion which is a unique religion of its own kind. On the way, we come across a few gompas, stupas, and monasteries that reflect the Bon Po religion prevalent in the region. The trek even gives us an outlook on people and their lifestyles. The lifestyle of people in the Dolpo region is very different. It is really difficult to sustain in such as difficult terrain but people are laborious and work to their best to survive them is such a remote and rural terrain.

Follow the majestic trail to Shey Phoksundo Lake
