Old Kingdom of Mustang Trek is a classic adventure full of natural and cultural wonders! This mystic land lies on the highest and largest extension of the Tibetan plateau. As you fly from Kathmandu to Jomsom via Pokhara airport, you take a trail up to upper Mustang through an arid landscape which was the ancient trading route between Nepal and Tibet. In fact, you can find a strong influence of Tibetan culture and lifestyle in this area. When you walk forward through the trail, you will notice the variation in the environment that turns dry from lush. As you move higher, the trees will grow thinner and thinner. Therefore, you will find thin forest of a few juniper trees and bushes.
Old Kingdom of Mustang Trek takes you to the forbidden land of upper mustang to give you a surreal taste of natural and cultural ecstasy. The Kingdom of Mustang is one of the remote areas of Nepal. Thus, area is not affected by any kind of modernization. As you walk through the trail and learn about the culture and practices, you will feel like you have traveled back to time. The culture, practices, tradition, everything about this place is a phenomenon.
On the way, you will pass through villages where the house is painted in white which resembles the Tibetan villages. The small houses’ colors in white looks are quite attractive. Meanwhile, the people residing in this area live a simple life and are engaged in agriculture and animal husbandry. Similarly, they grow crops and vegetables like potato, cabbage, carrots, spinach, buckwheat, barley which are the main staple diet of the people living in Mustang.
Your trekking journey starts from Jomsom to Kagbeni. You pass villages like Chele, Chuslang, Syanbochen, Gemi, and Tsarang to Lo Manthang. From Lo Manthang, we take a trail to a popular spiritual hub in the Annapurna region – Muktinath. On the other hand, the view of the Himalayan panorama from this place is spectacular. Leaving Muktinath we retrace our journey back to Jomsom.
After flying back to Kathmandu from Jomsom via Pokhara, you will be taken to Nagarkot via a short drive. Hence, In Nagarkot, you can experience the glory of natural beauty near the Kathmandu valley. Upon your arrival in Nagarkot, you can let your eyes wander around the peak that surrounds you one after other. Nagarkot is a popular vantage point near Kathmandu for mountain views.

Get an authentic taste of history, culture and art of Nepal in the UNESCO listed heritage sites in Kathmandu. Visit Kathmandu Durbar Square and head towards Swayambhunath stupa. Experience the unique aspect of Hindu culture in Pashupatinath temple and go to the highest stupa of the world – Boudhanath stupa. As you conclude your guided tour, return back to hotel. Enjoy your night at a hotel in Kathmandu.
Early in the morning, your guide will pick you up and escort you to a vehicle for a drive to Pokhara today. We take a scenic route through Trishuli River. We pass the country side landscape of Nepal with hills, trees, river and stone build houses to Pokhara. As we reach Pokhara, you will be transferred to a hotel for check in. Enjoy your evening wandering around the city of Pokhara. Enjoy your night at a hotel in Pokhara.
We take an early flight to Jomsom. The flight in itself is captivating as we will be flying up between the two mighty mountains i.e. Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. As we fly up, we can also see a change in landscape from lush to arid. The lushness of Pokhara slowly disappears and dry landscape comes to sight. Jomsom used to be the administrative center of Mustang. Upon our arrival in Jomsom, we start our trekking journey. We take a gravel path along Kaligandaki river to Kagbeni. Overnight stay at a guesthouse in Kagbeni.
We leave Kagbeni and follow our trail to the bank of Kaligandaki river upstream. We then enter Mustang region and pass various ridges on the path. On the way, across the river, a popular gompa called Kang Gompa comes to our sight. We visit the gompa and continue towards Chuslang village. As we approach towards the village, we can see the colourful prayer flags and chotens on the way. The white washed houses looks alluring. We pass the fields of wheat, potatoes and apple orchids as we ascend to the village of Chele. Overnight at a guesthouse in Chele.
Today, we follow the trail up to Taklam La pass. As we climb up the pass, we will pass through the narrow stretches and Tibetan plateaus. What is more interesting is the views of the Nilgiri, Tilicho peak, Yakawa Kang and Damodar Danda that will energize you throughout the day. We further walk for around three hours and pass some small streams and juniper forests to Syangbochen. Overnight at a guesthouse in Syangbochen.
Leaving Syangbochen we trek uphill to the Yamda La at 3,850m. From here, we pass chotens, tea houses and local villages built in Tibetan styles. We cross few other passes on our trail to Nyu La pass. On the way to Nyi la, we pass various trees and fields of barley. Nyi Pass at 4,010m is the highest point of our trek from where we descend down to Ghemi for overnight stay. Overnight at a guesthouse in Ghemi.
Our destination for the day is Tsarang and our trek today is quite easy. We descend down to Ghemi khola and pass mani walls on the way to Tsarang. Overnight at a guesthouse in Tsarang.
Today, our trail descends down until we cross the Tsarang Chu from where our trail climbs up steep through a rocky trail to a pile of stones on a ridge followed by Tholung Valley. The trail from the valley turns north and climbs up to a large Chorten which actually marks the boundary between Tsarang and Lo. We further climb up and cross a stream to a desert like landscape. As we reach a top of ridge, the walled city of Lo comes to our sight. After a short descend, our trail climbs up to the plateau of Lo Manthang at 3730m. we cross an irrigation canal and walk towards the entrance gate of the Lo city. Overnight stay at Lo Manthang.
Lo Manthang is a city of wonders. There and many must visit places here therefore, we have set aside two day here for excursion. Today, we visit the walled city in Lo. There are four temples within the city walls. However, the buildings are locked and the key to the temples are given to the caretaker which makes the access to the temple quite challenging.The tall Champa Lhakang is dated back to 1420s. The central courtyard has beautifully carved wooden pillars and inside the temple is a huge painted statue of Maitreya, (the future Buddha). This huge clay statue sitting on a pedestal occupies the entire area on ground floor. We visit the walled city and the villages nearby and spend our day exploring the unique attire of this city. Overnight at Lo Manthang.
Yet another interesting day at Lo Manthang where we will explore the ancient palaces and monasteries. We visit the red Thugchen gompa, Chyodi gompa and Raja’s palace. The red Thugchen Gompa is near to the centre of the city and is a massive assembly hall. Raja's palace is a four-storey building in the center of the city which is a house of royal aristocratic family of Lhasa. Overnight at Lo Manthang.
Trek to Yara
Leaving the mystic city of Lo Manthang, we climb up to a glacial valley with reddish brown historical wall city on our sight. The picturesque view of the city as we climb up gets perfect than ever. We walk along the mountain ridge for about an hour and descend down to the village popular as DHI. From here, we cross a river to follow a path that takes us to Yara. Overnight stay at Yara.
We have set this day for exploring Yara village. Today, we visit the Luri Gompa (also known as Kagyukpa cave monastery). This gompa was founded in the 13th century and has its own religious importance. After visiting the monastery, we head towards Damodar Kund. This place is popular amongst hindu pilgrims. We can find black ammonite fossils here which and collected and worshipped by Hindus and Buddhists pilgrims as a form of God Vishnu. Overnight stay at Yara.
Leaving Yara, we descend down to the Dhechaeng Khola, a river which runs from the Damodar Kund. Then we cross a small river and climb up for around one and a-half hour through DHI village to the Lo-Pa village of Tangya. We further pass this village and walk until we reach the village of Tangbe. Overnight stay at Tangbe.
Today we climb up following the trail to right until we cross a suspension bridge over a river. We will then come across Yak khola right before we climb a terraced hill to Paha at 4,210m. Paha is the highest point of our Upper Mustang trek. Our trail climbs for around two and a half hours to the top. The climb up to Paha is quite steep and tiring but the views from this point is a reward to your hard day of walk. You can see the magnificent views of Damodar Himal and Saribung Himal. We stay at Paha today for overnight halt.
From Paha, we descend down to Chhuksang. From here, we trek up to Gyu La at 4077m. Our walk for the day is easy and enchanting as we pass through Kharkas. We can see domestic animals and wild goats grazing in those grasslands. As we reach to the top of Gyu La, we will be blessed with the views of Tukche peak, Thorong peak, Nilgiri, and Muktinath valley. We further continue along our trail until we reach Muktinath for overnight halt.
A free day in Muktinath. You can visit the temple and wander around to applaud the magnificent views of Annapurna panorama. The view of the mountains from this place is brilliant. It is a perfect spot for photography if you are interested. Overnight stay at Muktinath.
Leaving Muktinath, we continue our journey towards Luprak. Overnight at a guesthouse in Luprak.
Retracing our journey back, we head towards Jomsom. Overnight at a guesthouse in Jomsom.
We take an early flight to Pokhara and explore the ever shining Pokhara valley. We visit Phewa lake, enjoy boating and head towards Gupteshwor temple, David falls and Nepal mountaineering museum for exploration. You can also opt for adventure activities like bungee jumping, paragliding and others if interested. Overnight at a hotel in Pokhara.
Today, we fly back to Kathmandu and drive towards Nagarkot, a popular vantage point near Kathmandu for sunrise and sunset view. In the evening, we wander around to explore the lush hills with picturesque view of mountains. You will find a peaceful environment to rejuvenate yourself after a long trekking journey. Overnight at a hotel in Nagarkot.
We wake up early in the morning to watch the shivering beauty of sunrise amidst the mountain panorama. The glittering golden rays of sun over the snowcapped mountains from the view tower looks fabulous. After appreciating the glorious sunrise, we return back to our hotel for breakfast. After breakfast, we explore Nagarkot for a while and drive back to Kathmandu. On the way back, you may visit Bhaktapur Durbar Square if interested. Overnight at a hotel in Kathmandu.
Today you will be transferred to the airport for your journey ahead. Hope to see you again!

Regarding your arrival
As you arrive at the airport in Kathmandu, you will have to pay the Visa charges to enter in to Nepal. Two passport size photos are necessary for this purpose.
Your guide will be there at the airport to pick you up and escort you to the hotel for check in. After a bit of refreshment, your guide will explain your itinerary and your plan ahead.
We offer you the best accommodations possible. The rooms will be clean, comfortable and homely. In Kathmandu, you will stay at a hotel with deluxe rooms. During the trek, you will stay at the best guesthouses or lodges. Generally, accommodation during the trek in guesthouses are on sharing basis. However, the rooms are clean, comfortable and the warm welcome of the people in the guesthouses will make you feel greeted and homely.
Meals and Drinking water facility
The meals during the trek are included in the package that we offer. The meals include breakfast, lunch and dinner during the trek. Other snacks and personal preference items are not included in our package.
If you want to exchange your currency with the Nepalese currency, you can exchange it at the counters in airport. It is reliable when you exchange the currency through banks or other certified money exchangers. You can find the exchange rate for the day in website of Nepal Rastra Bank.
Travel Insurance is highly recommended as it is for your own safety and security. Our package doesn’t include the cost of travel insurance. You are responsible for your travel insurance.
Import and Export during the travel
You can import some duty free items prescribed by the Custom Act in Nepal. You can bring a 1.15ml bottle of distilled liquor, 200 cigarettes and 50 cigars. Also you can also bring laptop, video camera, binoculars and other portable items that are essential for you. In case of export, it is prohibited to carry the paintings, manuscripts or other things of cultural importance which carries over 100 years of history. In case you purchase any kind of statues of paintings, you need to verify it at the Department of Archaeology before export.
High altitude sickness
Many people suffer from high altitude sickness while they opt out for trekking in high altitude regions. There might be various causes for high altitude sickness. It may be due to lack of your body endurance or due to lack of proper acclimatization and many more, Therefore, one needs to be alert about the possible risks. Himal Eco Treks (HET) team always carries a first aid tool with them in case of emergencies. However, it is recommended for you to keep the knowledge of high altitude sickness.
