Overview

Kailash Overland Tour is a fascinating journey that takes you to the holy Mt. Kailash via the newly opened Tibetan border route (Rasuwagadi- Kerung port). Kailash is probably one of the best religious sites known for its spectacular location, pious history, holy Mt. Kailash, Mansarovar lake and other exquisite Himalayan terrains that you pass along your way to Kailash. Kailash overland tour is one of the best picks if you are willing to visit Mt. Kailash in the least time possible through an overland ride. It starts with an insightful visit around the UNESCO listed heritage sites in Kathmandu which is followed by a drive towards Kerung, the Nepalese Tibetan border via the Langtang National Park route. This route was closed post-Nepal earthquake 2015 but has been opened recently after all the reconstruction works. From Kerung, the drive passes through the villages of Saga, Mansarovar, and Darchen with inspiring views of Tibetan terrain, high passes, and mountains on sight. From the periphery of Mt. Kailash, you will be blessed with the astonishing views of Mt. Kailash, Mansarovar lake, Raksheesha lake, and Mt. Gurla Mandala.

The piousness of Mt. Kailash is not just limited to Hindu pilgrims but extends to Buddhist and Jain followers as well. As per the Hindu mythology, Mt. Kailash is considered to be the abode place of Lord Shiva. No wonder, the place receives thousands of Hindu pilgrims annually. There is a beautiful turquoise colored lake beside Mt. Kailash called Mansarovar. Even the importance of this lake is described in the holy books of Hindus. It is believed that anyone who takes a dip into this lake will get rid of all the sins that they were involved in till date. Buddhist mythology describes this place to be the abode place of Chakra Samvara and Guru Rinpoche – Padma Sambhava, the legend who introduced Buddhism to Tibet and beyond.

The serene water of Mansarovar lake with swarms swimming and Mt Kailash rising tall just beside the lake, nothing could have been so heavenly. So, are you ready to be a part of this journey that is nothing less than a drive to a natural paradise?

It takes around three days for you to circumambulate around Mt. Kailash. The Kora on around 53 km periphery starts from Darchen, a place which is 30 km away from Mansarovar lake. During the kora, you will feel connected to the majestic beauty of high mountains, local Tibetan culture, and wild Tibetan plateaus. Kailash overland tour ends with a drive back from Mt. Kailash to Kathmandu via the Rasuwagadi- Kerung port. The divinity that one will be able to experience during Kailash Overland Tour is empowering. There is much more to this tour than the spirituality and natural ecstasy. Himal Eco Treks organizes this tour annually to cater your lust for travel and treks. On the first day, you will pass many Tschörten and Mani-Stones and walk into the wide valley gorge on the western side of the mountain. Together with Tibetan and Indian pilgrims, you will pass the famous Prayer flagpole, the "footprints of Buddha" and past hermits. After about 7 hours of pure walking time, you reach your first storage place at 5100 m altitude.

Today's stage is very strenuous and is also the most important stage of the Kailash circuit. You reach the holiest place, the 5600 m high Dölma La. On the pass is a "sacred" stone decorated with many prayer flags. The Kailash is the holiest point in the world, the cosmic world axis, for the followers of four religions - the Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and Böns. The Hindus believe that here the divinity of Shiva lives with her female counterpart Parvati; The Tibetan Buddhists believe that at the Kailash the deity Demchog dwells. The migration of the Kailash is not only to be freed from sin, but also to influence reincarnation favorably. From the campsite, you need about 3-4 hours to the Dölma La.
